At International Sports Kindergarten Smile (ISK-Smile), one size never fits all. From the moment a child enters our environment, we pay close attention to who they are, how they learn, and what excites them. This commitment to individualized learning is at the heart of everything we do. It ensures that each child grows at their own pace, develops confidence in their abilities, and builds a lifelong love for learning.

Understanding Individualized Learning

Individualized learning means adapting the educational experience to fit the needs, interests, and pace of each child. In practice, this could mean offering different levels of support, adjusting the way material is presented, or providing various options for exploring a topic. At ISK-Smile, individualized learning is not an added feature—it is a daily practice embedded in our routines, our curriculum, and our classroom culture.

In early childhood, no two learners are the same. Some children thrive when they move and explore with their hands. Others prefer to listen quietly, observe, or talk through their ideas. Recognizing this, we offer a range of learning experiences throughout the day—especially during learning centers, where children choose activities based on their interests and readiness. Whether they are tracing letters, sorting objects, building with blocks, or creating art, each child is supported by teachers who know their strengths and challenges.

How We Apply It at ISK-Smile

Our individualized approach is woven through every aspect of the day:

  • Circle Time: Even in group settings, we invite every child to participate in their own way. Some speak confidently; others may need more time to feel comfortable. Our teachers are not lecturers, who sit in front of a white board and recite a lesson, they know how to encourage each child to participate in their learning process.

  • Learning Centers: Children are encouraged to engage with the day’s theme or focus area. They are separated and can work individually or with help, depending on their level of understanding.  Teachers observe closely and offer help, challenges, or extensions depending on each child's needs.

  • Jolly Phonics: As we introduce a new sound each week, children practice it in multiple ways. Some may enjoy writing the letter; others may prefer building it with playdough, tracing the sound/letter with a marker or acting it out. The key is giving them choice and voice.

  • Physical Education: During sports and movement activities, children are encouraged to try new challenges but never pushed to go beyond what feels safe. Confidence grows step by step.

Throughout the day, teachers continuously reflect on how each child is engaging. We track their progress, adjust activities as needed, and collaborate with families to ensure support and consistency. This flexible and intentional approach makes every child feel seen and valued.

The PYP Perspective: Agency, Voice, and Choice

As a kindergarten guided by the Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework of the International Baccalaureate, ISK-Smile places strong emphasis on student agency. Children are not passive receivers of information; they are active participants in their own learning. They are encouraged to ask questions, make choices, and reflect on what and how they learn.

The PYP aligns beautifully with individualized learning. It celebrates diversity, supports inquiry-based exploration, and values the whole child—intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Within this structure, children at ISK-Smile develop essential IB Learner Profile traits such as being inquirers, communicators, thinkers, and reflective learners.

Why It Matters

Individualized learning ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed—not by fitting into a system, but by having a system that adapts to them. When children are taught in a way that makes sense for them, they are more engaged, motivated, and confident. They feel safe to try, to fail, and to try again. And they feel proud of their growth because they know it is truly their own.

At ISK-Smile, this isn’t just theory. We see it every day: a quiet child who starts sharing ideas in circle time, a hesitant writer who gains confidence through play-based writing, a shy mover who joins a group game for the first time. These are the moments that show the power of meeting each child exactly where they are.

A Personalized Start to a Lifelong Journey

By honoring the individuality of each child, ISK-Smile creates a learning experience that is joyful, respectful, and effective. Our modern base, rich curriculum, and caring team work together to ensure that learning is never forced or rushed—but guided, supported, and celebrated.

Because at ISK-Smile, we don’t just teach. We listen, we adapt, and we grow together with each child, every single day.
